Upon self-examination, I’ve realized that we all have our own processes and our own styles. Initially, I thought of making an outline of someone with their own inner personality clashing against an outside world. I thought of a contrast between peaceful clouds on the inside, and stormy clouds on the outside. For this piece, I didn’t think it was enough. I did want to convey the “tension of opposites” that Morrie talks about, but clouds on the outside was gonna be too vague. Instead, I opted for an image of Times Square, New York, filled with advertisements. I kept the inner clouds idea because I still wanted the character, a good friend of mine, to be at peace, no matter what surrounds her. While the world tries to drown us in their advertisements and cultural standards, the character stays true to themself, not throwing away the culture of the world, but keeping her own self-image alive. Again, clouds prevail due to their seeming lightness. They rise above humanity’s heaviness.
